Osteoporosis

The Silent Disease…

Osteoporosis and osteopenia are diseases characterized by a loss of bone mass. This leads to skeletal fragility and then to fractures. Often times, the fracture becomes the first symptom that alerts one that they have osteoporosis. One of two women and one of eight men will be diagnosed with this disease.

The Numbers are Staggering…

Osteoporosis accounts for more than 1.5 million fractures/year. The spine (700,000 fractures), the hip (300,000 fractures), and the wrist (250,000 fractures) are the most common sites that are affected. These fractures can cause life- altering changes. For example, half the women with a hip fracture will die within one year of the fracture. At six months following a hip fracture, only 15% can walk across a room unaided. By the year 2020, osteoporosis related costs will total $65 billion/year.

Studies Demonstrate the Effectiveness
of a Comprehensive Program…

Numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits of a combined program that includes medication, diet, and exercise. The gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis is the bone density scan. One should first see their physician for a thorough work-up and evaluation. Physical therapy can be an important component of a comprehensive program in deterring bone loss. Weight-bearing and resistive exercises can assist in preventing further bone loss and, at times, contribute to bone growth.

An Individualized Program…

Following a comprehensive evaluation in which posture, flexibility, balance, and strength are assessed, an individualized treatment program is developed. Instruction in correct body mechanics and postures for performing activities of daily living are an integral part of the program. If appropriate, modalities can be utilized to help control pain if present.
